Synonym
Plethodon jordani subsp. Jordani ,Blatchley, 1901

Summary
The entire range of this Red-cheeked salamander is within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was introduced to Mountain Lake Biological Station, Virginia, USA, between the years 1935 and 1945. This the range of the Northern slimy salamander Plethodon glutinosus. It has been observed that competitive interactions between the two species do not lead to any fitness differences in either species. Their shared traits could potentially enable the species to hybridize.
Habitat Description
"This species inhabits moist dense hardwood, coniferous, and mixed forests with mossy logs and slabs of rock. It is most abundant in forests that are dominated by red spruce and Fraser's fir and in areas where the forest floor is covered with a heavy layer of moss with only a little soil over a mass of large boulders (Green et al. 2014). Individuals are often found in burrows, leaf-litter, or in spaces under rocks and logs during the day. This species tolerates some level of disturbance, and much of its range occurs in secondary growth forest. Breeding is by direct development, and the eggs are probably laid in underground cavities" (IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group. 2022)

Justification for EICAT assessment

No competition was observed between P. jordani and P. glutinosus in the range where P. jordani was introduced (Rissler et al. 2000). These two species co-occur naturally in other parts of its range, and this study was done in the extralimital range (Rissler et al. 2000). The lack of impact observed on native species warrants MC being assigned.

Description of impacts
Competition- Interactions between Plethodon jordani and P. glutinosus do not lead to any fitness differences in either species. Hybridisation- P. jordani and P. glutinosus have shared traits that could potentially enable the species to hybridize.
