Summary
Water wattle (Acacia retinodes) is a small tree native to Australia. It is cultivated as an ornamental tree in warmer parts of the world. It is known to have naturalised in California where it has spread from its initial plantings.
Species Description
Water wattles are large shrubs or small trees with five inch long linear-lanceolate phyllodes.

Preventative measures: Acacia retinodes is listed as an invasive alien species in Legislation (Decreto - Lei 565/99) declared by Portugal in 1999. These new regulations will imply to inspections of the horticultural sector (e.g. nurserymen, landscape designers, gardeners) and the use of these species will incur a penalty (EPPO, Reporting Service 2006).

Management options include girdling and pulling out seedlings and young plants. Chemical options include herbicide application through cut stump or basal bark methods.
